Grab Your Shoes and Walk Your Way to Health

To become an accomplished walker -- no irony here -- it's not necessary to hike JMT (John Muir Trail, for the uninitiated). Certainly, there's no need for fancy equipment, your heels and toes and a pair of comfortably stylish Converse shoes will do just dandy.

All the experts say it just as plainly: no exercise pill exists. But it's also not necessary to undergo an ostensibly revolutionary lifestyle change because fitting in as little as 30 minutes worth of walking into your daily routine can provide substantial health benefits. And if you have a preference for Reebok shoes, by all means, grab those instead and lace them up to get going on your walk.

Although most any shoe will do (for the task, your feet can even go bare!), good walking shoes are recommended if you do take it upon yourself to begin an exercise program of consistent daily walking. Something to note is that most experts say that the cushioning of athletic shoes tends to have taken a full beating after six months of continuous use. The situation is easily resolved, of course. You can either restock on your favorite Reeboks or keep a spare pair of Adidas shoes nearby.

Walking is a low-impact activity and makes a great introduction to a renewed period of physical engagement. Walking routines can be completed indoors or out, singly, in pairs, or in big groups. Once you've built up your endurance, there'll be walk-a-thons and walking clubs for you to consider and try. You might even meet people who use Saucony shoes instead of Adidas, Reebok, or Converse -- so many surprises await!

Moreover, a walking program can be your ticket to a cornucopia of life-long health benefits. For example, did you know that because walking is a weight-bearing physical activity it can boost your bone density and help you fight the risk of developing osteoporosis? Likewise, walking for at least 30 minutes, five days or more out of the week, is a proven method for controlling blood pressure. The potential of your lifespan will also be statistically enhanced. So what do you say, are you up for a walk today?
